The strength of a material refers to the material's ability to resist an applied force.
The term strength of materials most often refers to various methods of calculating stresses in structural members, such as beams, columns and shafts, when the equations of equilibrium are not sufficient to solve the problem.

subjects for a mechanical engineer are of 3 groups
1.design
2.production
3.thermal

1.Design:
Design is for designing machine elements. It is different for different materials.Designing forces is the first part in design. Subjects deal with designing forces are mechanics, solid mechanics, fluid mechanics, machine theory.
Machine parts are designed by using forces. Here we design bearings,shafts.......
machine design is the subject.

2.Production:
Production is for producing elements according to the design which is made by designers.
Subjects are poduction technology,instrumentation,metrology,machine tools...

3.Thermal:
here the subjects are thermal related. Thermal engineering, heat transfer, power plant engineering, refrigeration, air conditioning...........

Need of Mechanical engineers

from the past 100 years mechanicals are ruling the world.
Persons who are ruling world are ruling because of mechanicals. For this no need to give examples.Though there are some companies without mechanicals, majority are mechanicals.
You can live with out computer, you cant without power.

Now mechanicals are playing an important role in Power plants.
there several options for mechanicals in higher studies.
